Introduction to Buddhism and Meditation Course (Weds)
7:30 pm - 9:45 pm
17 May
7:30 pm - 9:45 pm
Our newcomers courses introduce you to the two most important Buddhist meditation practices, along with radical Buddhist ideas that can give a new vision of what it means to be a human being, and a new depth and meaning to life.
Through a combination of team teaching, discussion and practical exercises, this course is the main gateway to the other Buddhist activities at the centre, and to a friendly, thriving community of Buddhist practitioners.
The course will run at Sheffield Buddhist Centre from Wednesday 17th May for 6 weeks at 7.30pm. Don’t worry if you can’t make every session, let us know your availability and we will try and accommodate you. Booking is essential.
All Buddhism classes are offered free of charge. Donations are welcome but completely voluntary. The centre is run on the basis of a ‘generosity economy’.
If you visit this page and no places are available, please email us at info@sheffieldbuddhistcentre.org to join the waiting list.

Ambedkar Day Festival
We will be honouring the great Indian Buddhist Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar. It was Dr Ambedkar who brought about the rebirth of living Buddhism in India in 1956. As well as converting to Buddhism himself, he initiated hundreds of thousands of others into Buddhism. Dr Ambedkar, like his followers, came from the most downtrodden section of Indian society and Buddhism for him and for them was a means not only of individual liberation but for the transformation of the whole society. The Triratana Buddhist Order continues Dr Ambedkar‘s work in India.
As well as honouring and celebrating this great man, we will also be learning how we can apply Buddhist teachings to our own lives. Dr Ambedkar had a profound insight into the nature of what it means to be a human being and what a human being needs to do in order to develop and change. He saw that any human development must involve others and taught the necessity of profound social change: a Dhamma Revolution.
All timings are for UK (BST)
1:30 Talk by Padmavajra on Dr Ambedkar and his connection with Sangharakshita and Triratna
2:30 Sheffield sangha pilgrims sharing their experiences on the recent pilgrimage to India
3:20 -3:35 Tea/Chai break
3:35 Puja led by Padmavajra
Special Events
We run events of many sorts for people at all levels of commitment – short retreats, study of Buddhist texts, meditative ‘sesshins’ and occasional arts activities like singing workshops.
We also celebrate the major festivals of the Buddhist calendar:
- Wesak and Parinirvana Day, commemorating the Buddha’s Enlightenment and his death.
- Dharma Day and Sangha Day celebrating the Buddha’s teachings and the spiritual community of his followers.
- Padmasambhava Day when we fete the historical and mythological accomplishments of the character who established Buddhism in Tibet.
