Two Remarkable Men
Sunday 27th October
Padmavajra and Vajratara will lead a day celebrating the lives and generosity of these two great men. The morning will focus on the life of Dr Ambedkar and the huge impact his work had on the lives of millions of people in India. In the afternoon we will celebrate the life of Sangharakshita, the founder of Triratna, marking a year since his death.
An invitation from Padmavajra
I am writing to tell you about a very special day at the Sheffield Buddhist Centre devoted to the lives of two of the most important and influential Buddhists of modern times: Urgyen Sangharakshita and Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar
Urgyen Sangharakshita – Bhante – who died last year, is not only the founder of our Order and Community, he is my teacher and spiritual friend. I first met him when I was 17 and this day will be an opportunity for me to share with you some of my own most cherished memories of Bhante, including my experiences of being with him in India when he returned there in the 1970’s to found our Order there.
It was Dr Ambedkar who brought about the rebirth of living Buddhism in India in 1956. As well as converting to Buddhism himself, he initiated hundreds of thousands of others into Buddhism. Dr Ambedkar, like his followers, came from the most downtrodden section of Indian society and Buddhism for him and for them was a means not only of individual liberation but for the transformation of the whole society. The Triratana Buddhist Order continues Dr Ambedkar’s work in India.
I would love it if you could come for the whole day, so that you can gain the fullest possible experience, but if you cannot do that it is possible for you to attend part of the day.
